Joe & Bobby walk urgently down a shiny New York sidewalk this morning, both of them dressed to blend into the hustle and bustle of the new day. They walk with serious looks and with purpose – they’ve got a jewelry store to rob, after all. Joe stops to buy a newspaper and turns to continue… (this IS an older film, by the way….)
“Almost forgot your change, sir.“ the newsstand man calls after him as he gives over a handful of coins to Joe.
“Ah, right, thanks….makes the world go ‘round,” Joe quips and smiles, as he jingles the coins in his fist.
“What’s that?” asks Bobby.
“Gold,” Joe replies, as he tucks his newspaper under his arm.
“They say love makes the world go ‘round…” offers Bobby.
“Well,” Joe smirks, “they’re right too…love of gold.”
This is how I remember a little scene in a film noir/grifter/caper film called Heist, screenplay by David Mamet. This film, like so many of Mamet’s screenplays/scripts (The Spanish Prisoner, Glen Garry Glen Ross) cuts across conventions of cinematic formulae to offer something of substance. In this one little conversation, the line is drawn, the gospel of the world is preached.
